On Regeneration

By Aldred Bediford on YF 908

There’s one thing that sets me and a select few apart from the rest of those in the villages. I’m not quite sure the villagers or even some of the aristocracy have noticed.

A few days ago, I faced a most harrowing experience. I was out late overlooking my kingdom, like most nights, when the railing gave out from under me. At that moment, I truly thought I was done, but the moment I collided with the roof, I was back in my bed, like it was just a bad dream. My crown had vanished from my head, along with the remainder of what I was carrying. As I turned back to the faulty railing, I saw my belongings lying there on the roof, along with the XP I had collected over my years. i stood up there to collect my thoughts and reason my way out of how this might of happened, but from then to now, I still can’t think of any other conclusion.

I died, and by some turn of magic, nature, or some other means, I returned to life. Distressed, I rushed to my wife down in the storage room to tell her about it. She understandably thought I had gone mad, but after a long while of explaining what happened, she seemed truly perplexed by it all, but clearly attested to nearly a similar experience very early in her life, which she thought to be dream.

The next morning, I discussed with my nearby friends in arms about such a thing. They say they’ve experienced such a thing as well. None told of a reason why. Reaching a dead end, I was forced to keep this great issue. But now here, I’ve made a few realizations that I need to deliberate here on paper.

Many have seen things popping into existence. Pigs, cows, monsters, all simply appear into this world, and seem capable of exiting in the same way. All acknowledge this as just as just a face, but what really confounds me is this:

None of the people in my village simply “popped into existence.” My compatriots claimed they woke up in a field on their first day here, with no other memories besides the knowledge of basic motor function. The others in the village state that they were here from a long-lasting lineage, far before any of my compatriots arrived.

Here I must state the obvious fact that my friends and those in the village are different. We bear different head shapes, noticeable different face structures, and different strengths, it also seems.

I see that there is a clear division between living things. There are those that “pop in”, and those that don’t. But now I bear witness to another category: those who regenerate. My “people”, if you could call us that, have some hidden ability to live once more when subjected to death.

With this revelation comes so many dangers. Firstly, I must not let this cloud my judgment of my friends or of my subjects. If so, then I will have lost the impartiality that is required of a ruler. Secondly, I cannot let this out to the public. Just another seen advantage that we have over the villagers might just cause a riot - or worse, a revolt. The results would be devastating. I must keep this news to myself at all costs, and I’ve strongly urged my family to keep themselves quiet as well. I can only hope that my friends will reach the same conclusion as well, as telling them might make this previously hidden difference known to them as well.

I see now that a responsibility has been put upon me to keep this village, maybe even this land, in a quiet balance. I will do everything in my power to keep that balance.
